about

Sometimes when I’m running low on inspiration I’ll turn to my crate of Hip Hop vinyl which contains a pretty even mix of LP’s and Singles. Often times I just freestyle to instrumental tracks on the singles, but on occasion I will write a song to a beat that really grabs my attention. This beat was on one of those attention grabbers. I’m almost positive I copped this record hand-to-hand from Raashan Ahmad of the Crown City Rockers the first time I saw him on tour with Coolzey at Gabes in Iowa City. But I might have gotten it from him the next time around when I had the pleasure of opening the show at the Blue Moose Tap House on March 13, 2010. I also have the CD with this track on it so I was already familiar with it. The original track is awesome and I pay homage to it in the beginning of my first verse by using the same rhyme scheme but changing the words “rhyme writing” to “crime fighting”. I wrote this sometime in August of 2012 and the hook was inspired by some real life situations that were affecting me at the time. I used it as a guinea pig when I recorded it with Logic Pro 9, meaning: I tested out different mixing and mastering methods, and tried a bunch of different effects and plugins. I got to a point where I thought it sounded really good so I bounced it and uploaded it to my Reverbnation page on September 5th of 2012. I shared it on Facebook and tagged Raashan Ahmad in it and got a good response. Raashan commented on the post with: “Yooooo! You ripped that homie, respect!!!!” it was a good day; made me feel like I really am “all that plus a bag of chips.”

-the original song is “Another Day (Rhyme Writing)” by Crown City Rockers – Basement Records – 2004
